MLA Michael Lobo has called for urgent measures to address the growing number of accidents involving rent-a-car vehicles driven by tourists, while also demanding stronger intelligence gathering to dismantle drug networks operating in Goa.

Speaking to reporters, Lobo said the issue of road accidents involving self-drive rental vehicles requires immediate attention, as both locals and tourists continue to suffer the consequences of reckless driving and drunken driving.

He noted that thousands of Goans depend on the rent-a-car industry for their livelihood, but irresponsible driving by some tourists has resulted in serious accidents, injuries and fatalities.

“There are thousands of young men and women earning a living through the rent-a-car business. However, when tourists drive recklessly or under the influence of alcohol, accidents occur, leading to loss of lives and serious injuries. This not only affects local families but also leaves visitors with unpleasant memories of Goa,” Lobo said.

He added that accidents often lead to lengthy legal proceedings for those involved and stressed the need for a comprehensive solution. Lobo said he would discuss the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to explore measures aimed at improving road safety and preventing such incidents.

On the issue of drug trafficking, Lobo praised the state government's support for law enforcement agencies and said the Chief Minister has given police a free hand to act against those involved in illegal activities.

According to Lobo, police have been encouraged to take strict action against offenders and ensure that those involved in criminal activities are brought before the courts.

He further stressed the importance of strengthening intelligence networks to curb the entry and distribution of narcotic substances in the state.

“Drugs should not be allowed to enter Goa. If they have already entered, authorities must identify those supplying and distributing them. The entire network must be dismantled and its backbone broken,” he said.

Lobo emphasized that stronger intelligence gathering and coordinated enforcement are essential to tackling the drug menace and ensuring that traffickers and peddlers are brought to justice.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over road safety involving rental vehicles and renewed calls for tougher action against drug-related crimes in the state.
