The High Court on Friday heard a set of petitions, including one filed by Deepak Surlakar, the father of Mandar Surlakar, who was murdered in 2006, challenging the Goa State Sentence Review Board’s recommendation to prematurely release convicts Rohan Pai Dhungat, Shankar Tiwari, and Jovito Ryan Dos Remedios Pinto. Three other connected petitions are filed by three of the four convicts seeking premature release. During the hearing, the High Court noted that the Goa State Prison Rules contain no provision allowing victim’s family to have a say or to object to a convict’s premature release. The court will hear the petitions next on July 9.
