Gram Sabha meetings held in different village panchayats across Goa on Sunday focused on issues ranging from the State's proposed urbanisation policy to local infrastructure and development concerns.
At the Moira Village Panchayat, Sarpanch Sagar Naik said Moira was the first village panchayat in Goa to convene a special Gram Sabha and pass a resolution opposing the State government's proposed urbanisation plan. He said the initiative was driven by the people of Moira, and only later did other village panchayats adopt similar resolutions. Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira also said Moira was the first village in Goa to formally oppose urbanisation through a Gram Sabha resolution, which subsequently inspired other panchayats to follow suit.
At the Colvale Village Panchayat Gram Sabha, residents discussed village beautification and demanded the construction of an underpass at the NH-66 Char Rasta junction to improve pedestrian safety and traffic movement.
Meanwhile, a tense Gram Sabha was witnessed at the Kirlapal-Dabal Village Panchayat, where residents questioned the panchayat over the lack of development and pending civic works. Heated exchanges broke out after opposition panch members chose to sit among the public instead of occupying their designated seats. Villagers sought accountability from the entire panchayat body, while an opposition panch member alleged that the Sarpanch had failed to undertake any significant development work in the village.
The Gram Sabha meetings reflected both statewide concerns over urbanisation and the growing demand for improved civic infrastructure and accountability at the village level.
